I am pleased to be part of the Brand Library & Art Center in Glendale, California, 49th Annual National Juried Exhibition of Works on Paper. This year's juror is Marvella Muro, Director of Artistic Programs and Education at Self Help Graphics and Art (SHG) in Los Angeles, as this year’s juror. From its inception in 1973, Self Help Graphics (a 501(c)3 non-profit) has been nationally known for functioning at the intersection of the arts and social justice. Providing a home that fosters the creativity and development of local artists, it is the pre-eminent center for Latinx printmaking and a resource for young and emerging artists. Muro oversees and implements exhibitions at SHG and since 2019 has been overseeing the Artist Lab and Artist in Residence programs with specific interest in creating multidisciplinary approaches and community engagement. Prior to joining SHG, Muro was the Community Engagement Manager at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), developing and executing art programs with community partners and artists in Compton, North Hollywood, and East Los Angeles. She also functioned as a curatorial assistant at LACMA and as Executive Assistant and project manager at USC Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena. Muro has a B.A. in Art History from Cal State University, Fullerton, and an M.A. in Arts Management from Goucher College in Maryland.

I am pleased to be part of the Brand Library & Art Center in Glendale, California, 48th Annual National Juried Exhibition of Works on Paper. All artworks will be included in an online gallery and a printed exhibition catalog. This year the was juror Dan McCleary, a Los Angeles-based figurative artist who has exhibited throughout the United States and abroad for the past 30 years. His works are included in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York among many others. In addition to his own practice, he has taught painting and drawing at UCLA and USC and in 2012 was an artist-in-residence at the Getty Center. In 2010, McCleary founded Art Division, a non-profit dedicated to training and supporting under-served youth who are committed to studying the visual arts.

Matter and Pattern

I'm very excited to be part of this exhibition. Presenting the work of three artists—Sonya Berg Menges, Michele BonDurant, and Britny Wainwright—who create colorful and rhythmic assemblages using such materials as found photographs, tape, ceramic, and vinyl to explore the boundaries of pattern and surface.
